Slate 7 Pro vs Slate 7 vs Mudi 7: Which GL.iNet Router Actually Makes Sense for a Digital Tech?

I keep getting asked whether I'm making an AetherMount for the Slate 7 Pro. Before I commit to designing a mount, I wanted to understand why people are buying it — because for on-set work I'm not convinced it's the right router for most digital techs.

Everything below comes from working out the actual chain: camera, router, laptop. That's where the answer is.

What changed with the Slate 7 Pro

The Slate 7 Pro (GL-BE10000) is GL.iNet's flagship travel router. Against the standard Slate 7 (GL-BE3600), the upgrades are real.

The Slate 7 runs a Qualcomm quad-core at 1.1GHz with a 2.22-inch touchscreen and dual-band Wi-Fi 7 — 688Mbps on 2.4GHz, 2882Mbps on 5GHz. VPN tops out at 385Mbps OpenVPN-DCO and 490Mbps WireGuard.

The Slate 7 Pro runs a MediaTek quad-core at 2.0GHz with a 2.8-inch touchscreen and tri-band Wi-Fi 7, adding a 5764Mbps 6GHz band. VPN jumps to 1000Mbps OpenVPN-DCO and 1100Mbps WireGuard, plus VPN obfuscation and DPI.

The headline is the 6GHz band. GL.iNet call it the world's first travel router to deliver full tri-band Wi-Fi 7 aggregation, with a dedicated 6GHz lane and Multi-Link Operation switching bands in real time to keep the connection stable.

That's a genuine step up. The question is whether your gear can use it.

The bottleneck nobody mentions: your MacBook

All M4 MacBook Pro models — including M4 Pro and M4 Max — are Wi-Fi 6E only. Apple stuck with 6E across the entire M4 Mac lineup rather than moving to Wi-Fi 7. Wi-Fi 6E does reach the 6GHz band, so you're not locked out of it, but you don't get Wi-Fi 7 and you don't get MLO.

The MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max does include Wi-Fi 7.

So if you're on an M4 Pro or M4 Max — which is most working digital techs right now — the Slate 7 Pro's flagship feature doesn't reach your laptop over Wi-Fi. You're buying a Wi-Fi 7 router and connecting it to a Wi-Fi 6E machine. It'll work fine. You just won't get what you paid for.

The people for whom the Slate 7 Pro makes complete sense are the ones who've upgraded to an M5 Pro or M5 Max. For them the chain is Wi-Fi 7 end to end.

Canon wireless tethering — the real use case

This is why the question is coming up now.

Capture One 16.8 introduced 2nd Gen Wireless Tethering for Canon. Traditional wireless tethering takes 10 to 25 seconds per RAW file. With the new system images can appear in as little as one to two seconds depending on network conditions. The camera sends a smaller files immediately after capture, fully editable the moment it arrives, while the full-resolution file transfers in the background without blocking new captures.

Currently supported on the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and Canon EOS R1.

Critically: Capture One specifically recommends a dedicated router supporting Wi-Fi 7, ideally on the 6GHz band, to reduce interference and maximise transfer speeds.

That's the Slate 7 Pro's exact specification. The standard Slate 7 has no 6GHz band at all — it's dual-band only. So for 2nd gen Canon wireless tethering, the Pro isn't a nice-to-have, it's the model that matches the manufacturer's recommendation.

One more detail: Capture One has observed better performance with the R5 Mark II when the router is set to WPA3-only rather than mixed WPA2/WPA3 mode. Both routers let you configure that.

The full chain that works: Canon R5 Mark II or R1 → Wi-Fi 7 router on 6GHz → MacBook Pro M5 Pro or M5 Max. Break any link and the benefit disappears.

The one thing the Slate 7 Pro does better — and why it might not matter

Set price aside. Assume budget isn't a factor. Does the Slate 7 Pro beat the Mudi 7 at anything that matters for photography?

Most of the obvious answers don't hold up. Dual 2.5G ports versus one sounds like a limitation until you remember you're on Wi-Fi 7 — an M5 MacBook Pro on 6GHz doesn't need an ethernet cable to keep up. Faster VPN throughput is real, but almost nobody is routing tethered work through a VPN in a studio. DPI and VPN obfuscation are capable features that I struggle to attach to any photography scenario at all.

There's one difference that does matter on paper: Multi-Link Operation across three bands.

The Slate 7 Pro aggregates all three bands into a single connection and switches between them in real time. The Mudi 7 has the same three bands, but its spec sheet describes dual-band simultaneous operation — 2.4+5GHz or 2.4+6GHz, no 5+6GHz option, no three-band mode. MLO doesn't appear in its listed features.

A commercial studio is a saturated RF environment — crew phones, building Wi-Fi, lighting control, the client's hotspot, sometimes another production's network through the wall. Wireless tethering is the most fragile thing on that network because it moves RAW files continuously and any interruption shows immediately. MLO exists for exactly that failure mode: if 5GHz congests mid-transfer, the connection shifts bands without dropping.

Two problems with that argument.

First, MLO requires Wi-Fi 7 at both ends. An M4 MacBook Pro is Wi-Fi 6E, so it connects on a single band and MLO never engages. Apple lists MLO support only on the M5 machines. Most working digital techs are on M4 Pro or M4 Max right now — for them, the Slate 7 Pro and the Mudi 7 deliver an identical wireless connection.

Second, and more fundamentally: if you're in a studio, why are you tethering wirelessly at all?

A cable is faster, more reliable, and doesn't care what else is on the RF spectrum. In a fixed studio setup where the camera isn't travelling more than a few metres, USB-C tethering beats wireless on every measure that matters. Wireless tethering solves a real problem — camera movement, no cable to trip over, shooting into a set you can't run a cable across — but those are location problems, or at least mobility problems. They're not typical studio problems.

Which puts the Slate 7 Pro in an odd position. Its strongest advantage over the Mudi 7 is MLO stability for wireless tethering in a saturated RF environment. But that environment is a studio, and in a studio you should probably be running a cable. The scenario where MLO genuinely earns its place is narrower than the spec sheet suggests.

What I can't tell you is whether the Mudi 7 actually underperforms in a saturated environment. Nobody has tested these head to head under real studio RF load with Canon wireless tethering running. The spec sheet says the Slate 7 Pro should hold up better. Spec sheets and shoot days are different things — I've learned that often enough.

That's a test worth running properly, and I intend to (if anyone can lend me a Slate 7 Pro router).

Why I'd still take the Mudi 7

The Slate 7 Pro has no cellular and no battery. It needs an internet source — ethernet, hotel Wi-Fi, or USB tethering from a phone — and a power outlet or power bank. In a studio, fine. On location, that's a problem.

The Mudi 7 solves both. 5G built in, 13.5 hours of battery, dual SIM plus eSIM so you can run a home country SIM and a local travel SIM with automatic failover. It has the 6GHz band, so it meets the same Capture One recommendation the Slate 7 Pro does.

You pay €180 more. What you're buying is independence from infrastructure.

Where I land

If you're 100% studio, the Slate 7 Pro is the better buy. Cheaper, faster VPN, tri-band MLO, dual 2.5G ports. In a fixed studio with ethernet on the wall, the Mudi 7's cellular and battery are money you don't need to spend.

If you go on location at least a few days a year, then you already need the Mudi 7, and buying both feels unnecessary. The Mudi 7 works everywhere the Slate 7 Pro doesn't, and does the same Wi-Fi 7 job when I need it to.

I design gear for the way I actually work — not for a hypothetical setup, but for the shoot I'm on next week. Same logic applies to what I buy.
